Self-Portraits
My whole life I have been consistently taking photos of myself and my surroundings. I decided to create my own self-portraits using my own photography camera and the lighting studio. I am inspired by the photographer Cindy Sherman who has successful taken photos of herself using different clothing, props, backgrounds, lighting, wigs, and makeup. Cindy Sherman has given herself so many different looks and personalities that she would not even be recognized. I decided to follow her ideas and create colorful images that are bold and stand out from the crowd. In my photos I used gel lighting to create multiple lightings on my face and body. I wore face paint, makeup, dresses, gym clothing, hats, sun glasses, scarves, and blankets.
In my photos I moved my face in many different positions so that the lighting would hit directly on one side or both sides of my face. I did not want the photos to look the same, so I played with a variety of different gel colors. I took photos standing and sitting in different chairs. My intention was to give different characters to my photos, so I change my hair and makeup in every photo shoot. This was something I have never done, and it was very complex.
Although this project was not an easy task, I still had fun along the way. I was able to doll up and play with makeup and clothing which made me feel like a kid again. I feel that it was hard to capture emotion in my images because I am not used to taking photos of myself at a far distance. I was not sure what I looked like with only the camera facing towards me. I took several photos at a time using the timer that was set for ten seconds. Being limited on time made me have to think quick and hurry to my spot which made me at times forget about the emotions to my face. I would like the viewers to respond in some questioning like, wonder how she created that image and I wonder what the story is behind these images.
Using the principles of design, I have form, color, emphasis and repetition in my photography. I used chairs, drapes, and myself as forms in my work. I feel that color is the most visible in my work because I used a lot of different lighting colors that reflected on my face, the floor, and my background. I emphasized on myself as the main focus throughout all my photos. I repeated the same type of colorful lighting and backgrounds in my work. I believe these designs and effects overall conveyed my intention and uniqueness in my work.
